The scary, the bizarre, the creepy. They bring out a strange thing in us. Like the urge to stand too close to the edge of a tall building – we’re afraid of them, yet oddly drawn towards them. Leap Castle, Ireland – The secret dungeon, when discovered, was found with three huge carts full of human remains. It’s no surprise that the place is said to be quite violently haunted by the most malevolent of spirits.
Island of the Dolls, Mexico – A man finds a dead baby in a canal near this isolated little island. As a tribute to the lost child, he hangs a doll in a tree. It then becomes a tradition. Soon, the island’s foliage is awash with the dolls. A massive – and unsettling – reminder of the child that passed.
Villisca Ax Murder House, Iowa – June, 1912. A young couple and their six children are brutally murdered in this house by a crazed and unidentified man. The house remains open as a museum to the incident. Visitors tell of its innate creepiness.
The Overtoun Bridge, Scotland – Looks scary, sure. But worse – more than 600 people have thrown themselves off this bridge so far. And what’s weirder than that? It’s said that dogs often do too…
Candidio Godoi, Brazil – The settling place of despicable runaway Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele, the area reports 18x more twins than anywhere else in the country. Strange? Well, not when you learn that Hitler’s trusted aide was an experimental whack job with a God complex and an obsession with twins…
British Sea Forts, North Sea – Built for the Second World War, these odd things now lay dormant.
The Metro 2 Subway System, Russia – Created for use by only government officials, the subway wasn’t sustainable and was shut down at a great cost. Now look at it. *shudder*
Aokigahara Forest, Japan – There’s never really been a proper explanation for it, but this site attracts a hugely disproportionate amount of suicides a year. So much so that the area is now littered with anti-suicide signs and regularly patrolled by security.
Chernobyl Amusement Park, Ukraine – A constant reminder of the tragedy that happened. To think that people once frolicked and had fun there…
An abandoned Lab, Siberia – Abandoned, this laboratory was used by scientists during the Cold War for carrying out controversial human experiments. This pickled brain serves as a disturbing reminder as to the place’s grim history.
Muynak, Uzbekistan – Dry lakes make for chilling scenes. It’s like a boat graveyard.
Captain Scott’s (Haunted?) Hut, Antartica – In 1911 Capt. Robert Scott and his team ventured to the South Pole. Only they were beaten there by another intrepid team. In this perfectly preserved hut of theirs, they were killed.
Abandoned Subway System, Cincinnati – Said to be haunted, this unsettling metro was too big and ambitious a project for the city and had to be shut.
Bird grounds, Jatinga – India – Weirdly, and sadly, between September and October, thousands of birds dive intentionally to their deaths in the Jatinga Valley.
Plane Remains, Antartica – Crashing in 1970, this Pegasus plane is too remote to recover.
Mass Cannibal Grave, Germany – Dating back some 7,000 years ago, this huge grave is said to contain the remains of more than 500 people who were cannibalized.
Griffith Park Zoo, LA – This is said to be the most haunted building in California!
Beelitz Military Hospital, Germany – Left to rot now, this is where doctors saved Adolf Hitler’s life in WW1.
The Domes, Arizona – No one knows who built these or what they’re for…
Helltown, Ohio – Just the name is enough…
