Meet Professor Sydney Engelberg. He’s a senior lecturer at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. A lot of his students are older than you might expect because Professor Engelberg teaches master’s degrees. Many of his students are moms, and the professor doesn’t mind them bringing their babies into his lectures because he’s that kind of guy. When one of the babies in his class started crying, the mother of the baby got up to leave. The professor wasn’t having that. Rather than the mother missing out on his lecture, the professor took the baby in his arms, calmed her down and carried right on teaching.
The photo of the professor teaching made its way on to the Internet, and soon this kindly old professor was the talk of the town. His daughter, Sarit Fishbaine, takes up the story:
“There’s a lot of young moms and a lot of them have babies, and he encourages them to just bring their babies to class. My dad just loves kids and loves babies, he has five grandchildren, so he just takes the baby. He’s the one that’s in motion, he’s walking around the class. So he just takes the baby and continues teaching.”
The professor has come in for praise from all corners of the Internet. ‘This is a professor who truly cares about the education of his students. Seriously,’ said one. ‘More than one subject being taught. +1,’ said another.
His family have been shocked at all the attention the South African-born educator has been receiving, but they’re pleased for him because they’ve always known he was one of the good guys … and now everyone else does!
“He’s even gotten love letters,” said the professor’s wife, Fredi Siskind Engelberg.
We’re not surprised!
