Autism is a frustrating condition to cope with, especially for children. It is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. As such, forming and maintaining relationships with others can be difficult. Recent research, however, has suggested that having a pet can help autistic children develop their social skills, which will help in their interaction with others.
Jared, a ten year old autistic boy, has always been with Clyde, 11, his faithful pet cat. They enjoy a special bond, and it is clear that Clyde is a source of great comfort to Jared. So when Clyde went missing for 12 days, Jared suffered enormously. Coping with loss is hard for everyone, but it is a particular problem for people with autism.
Fortunately, a neighbor found Clyde and returned him to the family home. When Jared returned from school, there was a fantastic surprise in store for him! As you watch the pair embrace, you realize just how important this relationship is for Jared.
