Back in 2010, Marina Abramovic, a Serbian artist based in New York, performed a 736 hour and 30 minute piece where she sat silent and motionless in the Museum of Modern Art opposite a succession of complete strangers – each of whom spent a minute face to face with her. The performance was a great success, with even Lady Gaga coming to watch the piece.
In the following video we see Marina’s former lover, Ulay, take his turn sitting opposite her. The pair were estranged 30 years previously, and Marina had no idea that Ulay would be appearing. After keeping her composure for a few seconds, Marina breaks down completely, in the arms of the man she has not seen for 30 years.
