FreeDict
Free online dictionary, thesaurus, etymology and word finder
FreeDict is an online dictionary that puts a word's definition, synonyms and antonyms, origin, pronunciation and translations on a single page. There are separate sections for the thesaurus, etymology, grammar and usage, and a word finder that doubles as a wordle helper. You can look words up without an account.
Our verdict
A handy online dictionary when you want more than a definition. Synonyms are ranked by how commonly each is used, so you get a natural replacement rather than an odd near-match. The word finder covers wordle help, patterns and rhymes, and the flashcards turn any word you look up into a study deck.
Why we like it: One page per word means no hopping between a dictionary, a thesaurus and an etymology site. The Practice saying it tool lets you hear British or American pronunciation, record yourself and check how you did. It is all free, with no paywall.
The catch: The pronunciation check listens through your browser and microphone, so it needs a browser that supports that. Definitions draw on open dictionary data rather than a single publisher's dictionary.
