This is the last journey of Sultan, a former K-9 dog with the Yarmouth Police Department in Maine. After seven years faithful service to the force, and after a full and lengthy retirement, it was time for the officers of his former department to say their goodbyes to Sultan, whose health had deteriorated to the extent that the decision was taken to euthanize him.
And say goodbye they did. With all the solemn dignity such an occasion demands.
In this heartbreaking video, we see the last journey of Sultan’s life, and we hear from some of the officers who showed up to pay their respects and give the faithful old boy a fitting send off.
It’s not often a dog gets a full police escort on his final journey. Those officers did him proud.

It is estimated that there are over 15,000 serving K-9 dogs in the United States. The dogs do many jobs, from frontline policing, to drug and bomb detection. When it comes time to retire, the dogs are usually adopted by serving police officers.
